Freo markets holds a lot of fond memories for me - Ive worked in various stalls over the years from making and selling clothes to cooking fish and chips. Before kids when I was a free spirited hippy chick with no major commitments Id often pop in there during the day and cruise around talking to everyone, nothing much on the agenda but philosophizing and free entertainment from various buskers outside or in the market bar where a cheeky midi would go down a treat. Id always purchase 4 gorgeous scented handmade soaps from Corrynes, a delicious savory crepe followed by a chocolate coated strawberry, then get my fruit and veg and be off usually losing all the bags at my next stop the Norfolk or Sale and Anchor (Scaly Wanker). Yesterday I meandered in feeling a little melancholy but not for long, as soon as I set foot inside, there was a free play piano with a young guy free styling his own sounds of awesomeness, instant mood changer, there was the lady with the large Italian hair who has been there for atleast 20 years and has not changed a bit who told me I hadnt changed a bit - another mood lifter, then there was Sam the soaps girl now moved up as market manager whos always good for a laugh. Great to see old faces and new, smell the pop-corn, Asian noodles, curries and other familiar market smells and sounds kick into that part of the brain that is nostalgia and home and walk out of there, with that comfortable old sense of belonging!
