Friday, December 5, 2014, Art Basel Miami: myself and colleague, Joanna Szupinska-Myers from UCR California Museum of Photography, visited artist, curator, writer, and educator Gean Moreno at Cannonball Studios, as part of research for our Latin American science fiction project at part of the Gettys Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA project. Artist and writer Gean Moreno is helping to shape the Miami art scene. Recently, he curated an exhibition at Miami International Art Fair, Improvising Architectures, which showcased the work of such important local artists at Christy Gast and Adler Guerrier. In his role at MIA, he made it possible for Miami nomadic art project Spring Break to experiment with art and music with their own booth at the fair, bringing a little playtime to what was largely commercial. Formerly of Locust Projects, Moreno is currently contributing editor of Art Papers magazine. In 2009, he received a Knight Arts Challenge grant, which enabled him to pursue his goal of creating Miami-based art books. [Name] Publications offers a platform for book-based projects. His art has shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, and around the world at Kunsthaus Palais Thurn and Taxis in Bregenz, Institute of Visual Arts Milwaukee, Haifa Museum, Arndt & Partner Zurich, and Invisible-Exports. Hes also published in e-flux journal, Monu magazine, Flash Art, Art Nexus, and ArtUS. He is now heading up a school at Cannonball, which is outside the formal academic institutions in order to generate more dialogue and visiting artists to the city, which he claims is lacking in the art departments in the area. research.art.dialogue r.a.d is an alternative school open to everyone. It draws from a long tradition of informal but rigorous pedagogical initiatives. A non-degree granting program, it offers a number of courses and seminars by a distinguished faculty of practitioners in the cultural fields and the social sciences. It is driven by an effort to develop a broad knowledge base for participants interested in working outside traditional disciplinary boundaries. Presently, most of his art consists of architectural interventions and considerations. He recently became fascinated by the large, cement, ball ballistrades popping up around the city, so he made his own in which he embedded souvenir beach towels, thinking why not make the architecture into a souvenir of sorts, challenging how we think of using public space. Several of them are in the peranent collection at the Perez Art Museum Miami, which we saw on Thursday night. cannonballmiami.org School: cannonballmiami.org/about-rad/ getty.edu/foundation/initiatives/current/pst_lala/
