Friday, December 5, 2014 Kanawha officials warn of big-money check scams Staff reports CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Kanawha County sheriff’s deputies are warning residents of a check scam involving promises of large amounts of money. Cpl. Brian Humphreys of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department said a couple contacted deputies on Nov. 29 after receiving a letter that claimed to be from Publishers Clearing House informing them they had won $250,000. The letter included a check for $6,650.70. Humphreys said the letter instructed the recipients to deposit the check, then mail $5,000 to an out-of-state address to get the rest of the $250,000. The couple deposited the check for $6,650.70 and sent a $5,000 check, but then found out the original check had not cleared, Humphreys said. He said similar scams were reported on Friday. Deputies are investigating. Humphreys warned citizens to be wary of any promise of easy money. Those who receive a check from what seems to be a reputable source should confirm the authenticity of the check by using a listed name and phone number for the organization, he said. Those who think they may have been a victim of a similar scam should contact the Kanawha County Metro 911 nonemergency number at 304-357-0191 to make arrangements to speak with a law enforcement officer, Humphreys said - See more at: wvgazette/article/20141205/GZ01/141209441/1101#sthash.uvwGLNsI.dpuf
