Friday Drivetime January 24th 2014 More weather disruption There are warnings of gale force winds throughout the weekend, likely to reach storm force for a time on Sunday. The wind will be accompanied by heavy rain and possible thunder and lightning. Ferry delayed? There are reports that the new Loch Seaforth ferry has been held back in production after gale damage at the shipyard where her hull is being constructed. A new launch date in March has been suggested, but Caledonian Maritime Assets expects to still be able to deliver the ship for service in July as planned. Goose on the menu There’ll be goose on the menu at Lionacleit school in Uist next Thursday, after school pupils looked at what could be done with the meat from the greylag geese now being shot. Marksmen are giving away geese, but many get put into landfill, so the Machair LIFE+ project are running a trial to put goose meat on the school lunch menu. Students on the Crofting Year course were given a demonstration of how to get a goose oven-ready, and the S4 Hospitality students were then set the task of finding a popular recipe for school lunch. A fruity curry was found to be most popular, and will be on the menu for a special free lunch on Thursday. Lionacleit is a community school and its canteen will be open to the public from 12.30-1pm, so everyone is urged to come along and try it for themselves. Volunteer for castle grounds Volunteering to make Lews Castle Grounds an even more special place will be easier thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund grant under the Parks for People programme. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and the Stornoway Trust are developing detailed plans for restoring and improving the Lews Castle Grounds, with volunteers to be an important part of the project. A series of events will be held between February and May and anyone interested in getting involved, should contact the Volunteer Centre on 01851 700366.
