Friday Focus: Looking Ahead I remember learning how to drive. I - TopicsExpress

Friday Focus: Looking Ahead I remember learning how to drive. I really wasn’t that bad. I didn’t floor the accelerator and I didn’t slam on my brakes too much. I did however have a tendency to swerve. It’s not like my hands were shaky or anything, I just had a tendency to look down at the road where I was instead of looking at the road and where I would be. Because of this I had to make constant major corrections to stay within the lines while driving. Over lots of time, and teaching from my dad, I learned that it was better to look at the road and where I was headed so I only had to make minor corrections along the way. Our spiritual journey looks a lot like this. In Hebrews 11 we are given what many call the “faith hall of fame” listing off many servants of God, their faithfulness and what happened as a result. After listing these various men and women the Hebrew writer starts chapter 12 by saying “since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.” Imagine an arena in heaven where all the faithful children of God are sitting cheering and applauding for you. That’s the picture we are seeing here. There is this great group of faithful people in heaven who conquered various sins and now they’re cheering you on, hoping you’d learn from them and do the same. What do they want us to learn? They want us to look ahead, just like they did and just like Jesus did (12:1-3). How encouraging it is to know that there are people in heaven cheering us on. Every day you and I live we are moving forward. Are we looking down at the ground or looking ahead?
