Friday. More than 25 vehicles were torched and eight people sustained major injuries in clashes. Rioting mobs pelted stones on each other and also the police personnel who were trying to bring the situation under control. Sources said that violence erupted over a cricket match being played at Maharaj no Delo near M G Road and spread to other parts of the town within a few minutes. By the time the police rushed to the spot, violence had spread to areas like Subhash Road, Satta Bazaar, Gandhi Chowk and Arab Chowk. People from both the communities came out on the streets and clashed. The police resorted to firing in the air, use of tear gas shells and lathi charge in several parts of the town to check the mobs from stone pelting and torching two wheelers. The arsonists reportedly looted some shops also. Police personnel were called from all across the district to Veraval. Senior police officials including Junagadh Superintendent of Police Dipanker Trivedi rushed to the coastal town. The situation is said to be tense but under control. Although curfew has not been imposed by the administration, the people are keeping indoors. The entire town is shut and there is a large police presence on the roads.
