After his hunting gun, homemade spear, and his friend’s car are confiscated for not having proper licenses, he escapes to the bush. But his failing health lands him in the big-city hospital. Knowing this will be the death of him, he begins a treacherous trip that may or may not lead him home. Iconic Aboriginal actor and dancer David Gulpilil (Walkabout, Rabbit-Proof Fence) was named best actor this year in Cannes’s Un Certain Regard section for his portrayal of Charlie. This is his third film with Dutch-Australian director Rolf de Heer (Ten Canoes, The Tracker) and was co-written by the pair based on the actor’s life. With Gulpilil’s wizened face and playful eyes, Charlie’s Country is a joy to experience, even as it breaks your heart.
