Friday, November 22 Feast of Cecilia, virgin, martyr Sing it loud and proud “Music,” the great symphony orchestra conductor Sir Georg Solti liked to say, “is a miracle.” The church has long recognized the power of music. In its Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the Second Vatican Council said: “The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value. . . . Sacred music . . . adds delight to prayer, fosters unity of minds, or confers greater solemnity upon the sacred rites” (no. 112). The early Christian martyr Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of music. Honor her sacrifice by dedicating yourself to becoming more involved in the musical ministry of your faith community—even if that means simply singing more in church!
