Friday, November 7, 2014 Stronger Together! 73.78% vote YES for TWU-USW Merger Agreement! In our referendum vote counted today, the members of the Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) have voted by 73.78% to join the United Steelworkers (USW). “This is a great result for our members, our families and our communities across Canada. This merger will help us improve the working lives of our members” said TWU National President Lee Riggs, “It is a great step forward. There is a real sense of unity and excitement in our membership about the future,” Riggs said. Voter turnout was just over 52%, the highest ever for any vote in the union’s history. “This whole campaign has been a great display of democratic involvement and participation by our members,” said President Riggs “Over half of our members voted and 21 of our locals had turnouts that were 60% or higher. This positive show of involvement and unity will give us momentum as we head into collective bargaining with Shaw and Telus.” “This merger is an example of a shared, positive vision for the labour movement: global, outward-looking, and focused on concrete action. We are optimistic about the future and we’re honoured by the votes cast by so many TWU members” said USW National Director Ken Neumann. The merger agreement takes formal effect on January 1, 2015, but both unions will kick off joint activities starting immediately. The merger agreement includes strong, mutual commitments around collective bargaining, education, organizing and legislative action. More information and updates will come next week, but in the meantime congratulations and thanks to all members who voted and took part in our exciting discussions around this merger. In Solidarity, The Telecommunications Workers Union
