As a king Saint Stephen was not above the violence and political maneuvering common to his time, yet he somehow also held to holiness. What tipped the balance to sainthood may be summarized in a letter to his son, Emeric, who also was canonized. Stephen advised his heir to show favor to citizen and foreigner alike. Be merciful, strong, humble, moderate, and gentle.
