Friday the 13th Urban Legends: Dog Edition In honor of Friday the 13th let’s take a look at some common dog urban legends: world edition. Greece has several superstitions regarding dogs. The first being that dogs could foresee evil, according to ancient legend dogs were aware when Hecate was at a crossroads foretelling a death. Dogs are believed to be aware of the presence of ghosts and their barking, whimpering or howling is often the first warning of supernatural occurrences. Howling dogs have always been a source of uneasiness. Native Americans believe that dogs are in tune and somehow connected to the moon because they howl at it, but some say when a dog howls and it’s the only sound in the night it’s an omen of death. Or if a howling dog is outside the house of a sick person…well…you know. This is especially true (according to legend) if the howling dog is driven away and comes back to howl again. Now, if the dog does a single howl or three howls and then is silent it means a death has happened nearby. It’s all very complex and complicated. While we’re on this somewhat dark subject matter, in Persia they station dogs next to the bedside of a dying individual to keep away negative spirits. Native American tribes also believe it is the dog that leads the spirit to “the other side” after they pass on. So maybe those howls aren’t such an ominous sign after all. In Scotland they say a stray dog coming into your house means a new friendship. This legend I can believe, a dog is man’s best friend! They say if you meet a spotted dog on your way to a business meeting in England it’s a sign of good luck, so are three white dogs traveling together. But if you’re a fisherman you don’t want to see a dog anywhere near your tackle box in any country, according to fisherman tales a dog near a tackle box means a bad fishing trip.
