Friends- Back to writing today. My goal is to write a little bit everyday as long as I can. I spend an awful long time in the car yesterday which gave me some time to think. Mainly, I thought about past holiday seasons and where I was during those times. I remember going to Mass on Christmas Day. Attending Catholic Mass was something I enjoyed as a child. Years later, I almost became a Benedictine monk at the age of 19, really wanting a simple life of faith. Even as of a year ago, I used to say Oh, I used to be Catholic. A few weeks ago I thought Does one really just stop being Catholic? I wouldnt be the person I am without Catholicism, so in that regard I actually owe it something, being that I am generally happy with the person I am now. I am guilty of bad-mouthing theists and coming down on Christianity as a whole due to my own poor experiences. One of the things Ive attempted to avoid this is talking bad or talking down to people of faith. As someone who embraced atheism for a time, I always struggled with my fellow atheists berating people of faith as if they were less intelligent for believing in God/gods/otherwise. I have come to realize that through philosophy we really know very little about the universe with a degree of certainty. The way philosophy looks at God is different than your classic idea of God in a religious sense. Many philosophers over the years have written extensively about God. From what I gather, God is represented in many ways throughout philosophy, but very commonly seen as an abstract being/idea, outside the realm of our understanding. Many philosophers tie God to the nature of reality or to cause and effect. This was one reason why I chose to be more accepting of theists and theist beliefs. Being that there is an infinite amount of possibilities out there, I know that I dont have many answers (if any at all) and I am happy to engage people in a fruitful and respectful way.
