Friends/Colleagues today 26 November 2014 I am attending: INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE CONFERENCE On November 26, HIER Climate Bureau is organizing the 7th Conference on Climate and Developing Countries. The event will take place at the Museum for Communication in The Hague. Just like the last editions, this event will bring together people from NGO’s, the Government, the academic world and the business sector that have an interest in the topics of climate change adaptation and mitigation in developing countries. Preliminary Program: Plenary session: Paris 2015: what can be expected? With Michel Rentenaar, Climate Envoy, The Netherlands At the Paris 2015 climate conference (COP 21), a new climate agreement has to be launched, that will be and implemented from 2020. What can we expect, and not expect, from the negotiations? To what extent will the $100 billion that developed countries have to mobilize from 2020 onwards actually be new and additional? And how can climate measures in developing countries help in closing the emissions gap? These and more questions will be addressed in a plenary presentation and discussion. Workshop round 1: Climate Smart Agriculture Moderated by Jan Verhagen ( Wageningen University) Presented by Sjoerd Croqué (Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs) and Theun Vellinga (Wageningen University) At the UN Climate Summit in New York, the Dutch Prime Minister Rutte introduced the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture, an initiative to improve food security in the light of the changing climate. In this workshop, Sjoerd Croqué (Ministry of Economic Affairs) will talk about the growing global interest for the influence of climate change on agriculture, of which this Alliance and other partnerships like the GRA (Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gasses) are a result. Theun Veilinga (Wageningen University) will discuss how climate change can be included into policies and strategies for agriculture, using the example of the Manure Kiosk. Self Help Groups Presented by Caspar Waalewijn (Tear) This workshop is about building local structures to address environmental degradation and climate change: Self Help Group experiences in the Horn of Africa. In this area, climate change is offsetting a fragile balance for rainfed agriculture. The experience of Tear with Self Help Group (SHG) formation in this area is adressed, linked to their work in Conservation Farming, Watershed Management and rebuilding of natural resources, and Disaster Risk Reduction comittees. Clean cookstoves Moderated by Neera van der Geest (FairClimateFund) On November 20-21, the Global Alliance for Clean Cooking is hosting the Cookstove Future Summit in New York. This workshop will start with brief discussion of the results of this summit. After that, HIER Climate Bureau and partners FairClimateFund, Climate Neutral Group and BIX Fund will talk about the carbon market for clean cookstoves projects and how the HIER Clean Cookstoves campaign aims to stimulate that market. Also, the new retail channel for cookstove credits that these parties set up together will be presented and discussed. Workshop round 2: Green Markets for the Bottom of the Pyramid Presented by Leon Simons (Magic Mitad) The Green Growth concept focuses primarily on the modern sectors in developing countries, like industry and large scale electricity production. But what does green growth do for the poor? Clean Cookstoves, the WakaWaka Power and biobased sandels are recent examples of green products for the bottom of the pyramid, the 3 billion people who live on less than US$2.50 per day. How can we bring sustainable energy to the poor? What can be learned from experiences with the development of these markets? This workshop will adress the results and lessons learned from Dutch entrepreneurs and NGO’s. Future adaptive water management Presented by Jorik Chen (Nelen & Schuurmans) Every question needs information to be answered. Nowadays lots of world wide information is freely available. Combining it with Dutch knowledge on water management provides opportunities. We can foresee where water will flow and where water will disappear, in detail over the whole world. That is important information for developing areas: How can we plan climate adaptive cities? How can we prevent flooding? How can we improve irrigation? This workshop shows the opportunities of future information systems: web based, intuïtive software which provides water management information on PC, tablet or mobile phone. Sumba Iconic Island Presented by Hivos On the Indonesian island Sumba, Hivos aims to have 100% renewable energy by 2025. In this workshop, they will share how they work towards this goal with a multi-stakeholder approach, and how they involve and activate the Dutch public on the other hand with “Expedition Sumba” and their crowdfunding campaign. Plenary Climate Game: Decisions for the Decade Presented by Maarten van Aalst (Red Cross Climate Centre) This game, that we will play with all the attendees of the conference, discusses long term development planning in a changing climate and with deep uncertainty”.
