"Friends, The Brayton Point power plant in Somerset, Massachusetts is the largest coal plant in New England. It has plagued the citizens of Somerset with health problems for 50 years and emitted hundreds of millions of tons of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. The extraction of the coal it burns has wrought havoc on communities in West Virginia for decades. It’s time we change that. On Sunday, July 28th hundreds of us will gather at Brayton Point to send a simple message to Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick: this plant kills people, destroys communities, and must be closed as soon as possible. Together we will call on Governor Patrick to use his authority under the Global Warming Solutions Act to shut down Brayton Point and ensure a just transition for all workers and communities connected to the plant."
