Friends ... if you grew up around the Finger Lakes, as I did, or you live here or vacation here now, please read this. Whether youre a farmer who thinks shes going to get cheaper fuel this winter because gas is stored right down the road! (not true -- this FRACKED gas is almost certainly slated for export, which is why your costs keep rising!) or you think putting a gas storage facility or two near farms and homes is no big deal, PLEASE read this. Crestwoods plan to store gas in the shaky-at-best salt caverns on the southern shore of Seneca Lake is the beginning of what will surely be mass industrialization of our area. Look around you -- it is already happening. Crestwood itself has the stated goal of making the Finger Lakes the gas transport and storage hub of the Northeast. Even if no problem ever occurs at the facility itself (unlikely, IMO), that means a LOT more giant trucks hauling dangerous materials on ALL our roads at top speed ... ditto for rail cars that roll silently thru our neighborhoods (until they derail and explode or spill into waterways), and ditto for the potential for a LOT more tragic accidents. Why would you want our beautiful Finger Lakes to resemble, oh, say, Detroit in 10 years? Are we and our properties expendable? Are we a sacrifice zone? Doesnt it make sense to do everything we can to protect the area where we grow our food, make our wine, play with our children in the beautiful waters? No matter how you feel about fossil fuels in general -- even if you like to dab a little diesel behind your ears before heading out for an evening -- you must acknowledge the foolhardiness of storing huge quantities of explosive fuel on a lakeshore in caverns that were never made for this purpose. PLEASE consider joining us at our rally on Monday starting at 5:00 pm at the Watkins Glen Marina, from where we will march the short distance to the courthouse to tell the Schuyler Co. Legislature NO, do not bring this poison to our shores! And wear blue to symbolize beautiful Seneca Lakes waters, which we want to keep clean and safe for all!
