Friends of mine, I need your guidance, your help, your love. Our almost 12 yr old dog Kyah bit Sarah last week (on the hand only, thankfully) Weve been noticing how grumpy she has been as of late, she growls at the neighbor kids, and has started to snarl and growl at Sarah. She has pretty advanced arthritis in her back knees and hips, and even though she has meds, is still rather grouchy old lady, even towards us. Shes started having issues getting outside in time to use the bathroom, too. During the time we were in the hospital, she had to have two different caretakers because of her behavior, she also bit her second caretaker on the hand (he did not wash his hand and it got infected, which sent him to the hospital). When she was away from us, she refused to eat and lost massive amounts of weight. She has severe panic attacks when she is away from us, not at home, destroying her kennels and beds. Weve spoken to the vet and it appears we are all on the same page that it may be time to put her down. Shes uncomfortable and it shows. We have to keep her separated from the kids which isnt fair to her, but we cant risk them being bit (again). I cant have her biting the kids, ours or the neighbors. Sending her to live with someone else a. wouldnt work- she wont eat and has panic attacks, and b. it is terrible to send an old dog to live out their last days with a stranger, away from the only family theyve known. I feel horrid about it. I feel like Im letting her down. I am replaying all the what ifs in my head. I hate this so much. What would you do? What have you done in situations like this? I lost Loki last year, then 2014 has been so totally insane so far, and now this. . .
