SEGREGATION IN 2014: ‘SORRY, NO MUSLIMS’ A sandwich board outside Eagles Nest Bar and Grill in Longreach has sparked a social media backlash for featuring the line “Sorry no muslims” alongside a quote comparing their selling of beer to Jesus turning water into wine. The sign was posted to the restaurant’s Facebook page last Friday and read “2000 years ago Jesus Christ made headlines turning water into wine… the tradition continues… we turn money into beer (sorry no muslims)”. Sound familiar? The owner of the restaurant, John Hawkes, told the ABC the sign was up for a total of nine hours, during which time he received over 200 phone calls to his work and home phones. “While the great majority are in support of free speech and are of patriotic sentiment, we have fielded too many abusive and threatening calls. For this I apologise to my family,” he said, before adding: “I sincerely hope I don’t end up sanitising my every thought to the robotic degree that is evident in commercial life around us.” Wow. Just… Despite Hawkes’ claims that most Australians are insensitive bigots, the response on social media has been overwhelming, with many calling out the restaurant on its discriminatory and Islamophobic attitude: Longreach mayor Joe Owens also told ABC that he believed the majority of people in Longreach did not support the sign’s sentiments. “Longreach is a town that I believe welcomes all races and all religions,” he said. “It’s a very unfortunate thing that has come out from one individual.” Unfortunate indeed.
