Friends took me out last night to Outback for a birthday supper. We waited about 30 minutes to get seated at a table. There were at least eight parties around us waiting as well. Couples and families all with one thing in common; all of them were focused exclusively on their cell phones. The entire wait. The children in the families had their own as well. No one spoke or acknowledged each other. Even those walking in the door were on their cells. I could not stop watching everyone. I became very troubled, then simply stunned. Eventually a deep sadness settled in my heart. I suddenly realized I was watching full-blown addiction steming from a covert seduction - the fracturing of relationships and families. The table next to us was a group of three; they were literally 100% absorbed on their cells through the entire meal. They did not even acknowledge one another whatsoever. They ate and scrolled, ate and texted. No one in my party touched their cells the entire night – we had a great time too. The Holy Spirit spoke to my heart later that evening this is indeed a strong delusion, a blind obsession. The wonder of observation, listening, conversation, laughter, sharing their day, holding hands, interacting – none of that happened. Tragic. All was invisible except for the lit screen clasped in their hands. This technology has evolved past obsession into bondage. The precious time lost in servitude to this little black box cannot be recovered. In the later and final days of our lives we will not long to hold a cell. Rather, we will long for the comfort and warmth of another hand in our hand. I am still sad. Dear God - what are we becoming?
