Friends who know me know I’m kind of a Classical Music nerd. We are what we are. Still, I have to share this signature “doom-and-gloom” Philip Glass piece, ‘Akhnaten’. In musicological terms, it’s considered “minimal” music. It is minimal because of its non-narrative, non-teleological, and non-representational “work in progress”. In other words, it represents the activity of listening. It achieves this by focusing on the internal processes of the music itself. I know, weird. But sometimes weird is beautiful. In this instance, “weird” is repetition, the slowly changing common chords and common tone in steady rhythms set to a task. What that task is, I have no idea. That’s for you, the listener, to decide. Oh, and Akhnaten, in case you’re wondering, was a pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty of Egypt who ruled 1600 years ago. Fantastic. youtu.be/pHXgbJEMJAo
