Frm my pastor Onayinka Olusegun Tongues2 Who speaks with tongues or who should speak with tongues? This question(s) oftentimes agitate the minds of many. Hence we shall proceed our study from here. Having seen tongues well discussed through scriptures, its trite to know for whom it is relevant. Lets hear Jesus.. Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; Tongues are for them that believe. Believe in what? The preceeding verses will help. Mark16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Them that believe the gospel of Jesus for salvation. This is as clear as the air. I have heard some say them here refer to the apostles. Thats an alarming error of reference and grammar. NO. Them that believe the message they preach.The greek word actually has it as a compound word- Believing ones. The book of Acts helps us further on this. Acts 2:1- And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2- And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 -And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 -And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Who were the They? Again the preceeding verses will help. Acts 1:13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. Jesuss disciples included the Apostles amongst many others. Acts 1:15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) These number was estimated at 120. Hence they were ALL in ACTS 2:1,referred to as the 120 disciples of Jesus. Thus from Acts 2 account ALL the disciples of Jesus spoke with tongues. From the law/ principle of first mention, we can safely say NO DISCIPLE of Jesus is exempted from speaking with tongues. Which just butresses what Jesus had earlier said Them that believe. Another narration is at the house of Cornelius. Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Who were the they? Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. 45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. They that heard the word. The message. The gospel. Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Again in this account ALL who heard the gospel and believed spoke with tongues. This explains earlier narratives which didnt have the word tongues imputed. For example Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. The Gift of the Holy Ghost can be inferred from other references to be accompanied with tongues. Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: 15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: 16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost coming UPON people in Acts is accompanied with tongues. The observation of Simon afterwards will further help. Acts 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 -Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. He saw. He observed that signs accompanied this ministry (laying on of hands) of the apostles. He saw the recipients act differently. He knew it took power for them to do so. What did he see? Peters response will help. Acts 8:20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. This matter here refers to the greek word TO SAY. Simon saw this matter. Utterance was the result of the laying on of the hands of peter and John. Its the gift of God. NO ONE in Samaria was excluded. Acts 9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. Paul (Saul) was filled with the Spirit here. Ananias laid his hands on him. Just like/ as Peter and John did. Did Paul speak in tongues? Let him speak for himself! 1Cor. 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all He did. Another narrative of the Spirit coming upon and been given or ministered to men is found again in Acts19. Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. Who were the them? Acts 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5- When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus They heard and believed on Jesus. They ALL spoke with tongues. From ALL these narratives tongues was FOR ALL believers. Now to the Epistles. We have an emphatic mention in 1 Cor. 14. vs-5 I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. He wanted ALL to speak with tongues (we shall discuss the greater of prophecy later) vs18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: They all spoke with tongues. vs26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. Every ONE (brethren) can have tongues to speak in our gatherings. vs39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. They were never to disturb the flow of tongues.Do not cease.Do not stop.Continue. He speaks to the WHOLE church. Thus far,we have seen and can safely conclude ALL believers in Christ can speak with tongues. As every where we see the gift of tongues in operation,NO ONE was excluded. Any one who seeks to qualify for tongues outside salvation is dwelling in unbelief. No second or third work of grace needed. Just the ONLY work of Grace- the sacrifice of Jesus qualifies all who believe to speak with tongues! We continue from here tomorrow! Blessed? I believe the gospel. I speak with tongues. I qualify.
