From 1910-1930 the first wave of The Great Migration began. This is the historic mass relocation of many African Americans from the rural deep south to the more industrial cities of the northern United States. Many made the journey to the north in search of a better life and more work, hoping to escape the remnants of the slavery days, at that time still very present with the segregated Jim Crow last and share cropping system. As a result many a great artist and musician were brought to cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit. One of these was The Father of Lindyhop, Frankie Manning. His mother moved from Jacksonville, FL in 1917 and brought her son to join her soon after. They resided in Harlem where Frankie would later go on to become one of the worlds best dancers and revolutionize American Dance with Lindy Hop. In the later years of his life he went on to teach this American Dance all over the world.
