From 1942-1945, to conserve energy, Tabernacle concerts were cancelled and the building closed to the general public for the remainder of the war. One might think the appearance of Tabernacle Choir singers would diminish in importance. But conductor Spencer Cornwall had two reasons to continue harping on it. One was sonic: women usually wore hats in the Tabernacle, which was well enough, but hats absorbed sound and needed to be removed for the broadcasts. Amazingly, it took the choir nearly two years of attention before the minutes could read: “the ‘ladies hats’ problem has been nearly solved.” And the restricted number of visitors actually argued, in Cornwall’s mind, for more attention to appearance: “We are seeking tone not only in singing but in everything connected with the choir. It is hard to tell who might be in the audience and how we will be judged. Only the choicest few get the opportunity to visit a broadcast now and we must always be on guard.” The most egregious breach he named? A soprano combing her hair during the Hallelujah Chorus.
