From April 29, 1924 - Republican - Hugh Grooms, Fountain Run banker, passed through Glasgow last evening en route to Frankfort to begin serving an eight year penitentiary sentence given him in the Monroe Circuit Court yesterday. The other cases against him have been filed away. However, Federal charges against him still hold. Ed Grooms, his father, had a $10,000 judgement rendered against him the same day, and all other indictments against him were also filed away. Grooms wrecked the Bank of Fountain Run, and his subsequent trial in Tompkinsville was one of the most interesting ever held in Southern Kentucky. It was a story of abused confidence, of fraud, of tragedy, and ruination of several of Monroes finest families. Hugh Grooms was cashier of the wrecked institution, while his father, Ed Grooms, was the president thereof. The shortage was well over $60,000 and had continued over a period of several years.
