From Carl Prine re possible Iraq murders by US Soldier Michael Barbera US Soldier Michael Barbera stands accused murdering two Iraqi boys. They were 14 and 15 years-old. Journalist Carl Prine is a Marine veteran of Iraq. Carl was investigating another story when he heard about a possible double homicide in Iraq. Carl looked more into the story, interviewing other Soldiers in America, and then dangerously headed back to Iraq to find the family. Carl found them. Bottom line: the Soldier, Michael Barbera, is now on trial for murder. As I read various stories about Carls research, a curiosity popped up. The boys were said to be deaf and mute. A note for people not fluent in English: deaf and mute means they cannot hear or speak. But a newspaper story said that after one brother was shot, the other called out to our troops Mista mista! (Mister mister! Something we heard daily in Iraq.) Then Barbera is said to have shot him, too. How could a mute boy cry Mista mista! Carl emailed today: By the way, theres a commonsensical reason why some of the guys thought that the kids could talk and hear. They didnt realize that people who are deaf can still shout. Its inarticulate, but deaf folks can scream. The soldiers afterwards just assumed that they were shouting in some language -- Arabic, of course, but also the only English phrase you heard a million times every day while out on patrol (Meestah! Meestah!). But they couldnt hear or speak any language. These kids never had sign training and they were born with deafness as a congenital condition, according to their family members who could hear. In the villages, they naturally were known as the deaf family. CID made the same conclusion after interviewing the family and other villagers. The kids were deaf. thenewstribune/2014/04/23/3161038/soldier-facing-murder-charges.html?sp=/99/296/
