From Chad Wesley Smith... Yesterdays training... 1-Competition Stance Squat-10x3 at 495-1 min rests 2-Olympic Squat-545x2x5 3-Pause Squat-455x3x8 Simple. These finished up 80 work sets of squats and deads in the past 2 weeks, all beltless, as part of a modified Cube Kingpin cycle Im doing. A couple points about this training... -Manipulating your rest periods is an often overlooked variable in training and can greatly enhance your special work capacity. General work capacity is important but special work capacity is more important. Youre a powerlifter, not a sled dragger, train accordingly. -Beltless work is best utilized in high frequency training periods. You cant go as heavy without a belt, so you cant tax your muscles, joints or nervous system to the same degree. To get a significant training effect with reduced intensity, volume must increase. -High frequency training early in a training cycle or even more so an annual plan will give you greater flexibility to make adjustments in your training as you progress. If you start out right away with high intensity/low volume, where do you go from there? You can only add so much intensity, look at all training variables (intensity, volume, frequency, rest periods) and give yourself options to adjust and grow, this is consolidation of stressors.
