From Chapter 4 of STARS IN HER EYES: She leans even closer to my ear. “I can see things . . . that haven’t happened yet. In my dreams.” Her voice is a trembling whisper. There’s a black thud in my stomach. “That’s how you knew I was coming.” “Yes.” “What . . . what else did you see about me?” Hidden sorrow and the stories that accompany it threaten to spill from her eyes. “Some of it I don’t understand. But you’re not here by accident. They want you here. And so do we. You can help us. But listen carefully. You can’t help me. I am already lost. Do y’hear?” I sit in stunned silence. My heart is drumming up a storm and there’s a high-pitched ringing in my ears. “Sunni, why can’t I help you?” She pulls her hand away from mine and gets up from the armchair. “Knowin’ everyone’s secrets, it’s a terrible burden. If they get a hold of me, it’s all over. So don’t think about me. I know you’ll do the right thing. Make the right choice, and all.”
