From Clay Jenkins: Timothy, Tuesday, the Dallas County - TopicsExpress

From Clay Jenkins: Timothy, Tuesday, the Dallas County Commissioners Court will vote on a high commission inmate phone and video visitation contract targeting families and loved ones of inmates with exorbitant fees to stay in touch with those they care about in jail. As a recent Seattle Times Editorial points out, one out of 28 children in the U.S. has a parent in prison or jail, a rate so astonishing, and growing, that Sesame Street felt the need to add a fuzzy little blue haired character, Alex, to talk about his locked-up dad. We can ensure families and loved ones stay connected with an incarcerated parent in Dallas County – a proven method to reduce recidivism. 80% of families with loved ones in jail are classified as poor. Balancing the Dallas County budget on the backs of poor families is wrong. It increases poverty and makes us all less secure. Thats why the Federal Communications Commission is taking steps to outlaw high commission inmate phone contracts at county jails. The contract proposed by Securus is an attempt to obtain a three year, high-profit commission contract before such contracts are declared illegal. If you are opposed to Dallas County entering into this contract, please let your voice be heard. Email the five members of the Dallas County Commissioners Court, and/or sign up to speak before Monday at 3:30 p.m. by calling 214-653-7165 for the Tuesday, November 14 meeting at 9:00 a.m. Your servant, Clay Jenkins
