Daily Dose When was the last time you sat with your friends and laughed until you cried? Sharing a hearty chuckle with pals doesn’t just feel good; it’s good for you too. Laughter releases feel-good brain chemicals called endorphins, which, among other benefits, also relieve pain. Our guffaws help reduce stress and seem to have a positive effect on the immune system. “Who doesn’t feel good after a hearty laugh?” says Jane Pernotto Ehrman, MEd, CHES, a mind-body coach at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Integrative Medicine. “Spontaneous laughter, whether triggered by our own internal thoughts and emotions or by an outside stimulus, is good for us. Benefits include: stress relief, reduced muscle tension, increased circulation, improved oxygenation of the body and brain, more balanced immune function, and better mental clarity.”
