From Cr Vaughn Becker: Upgrades to Taroom Cemetery and Ludwig Leichhardt Park ... Hello All Council has provided funding to carry out upgrades to the above facilities, some of the work will be carried out very shortly whilst the remainder will be spread over a number of years. I would like to take this opportunity to advise you of what is proposed. Cemetery:- The Lawn Cemetery will be extended further to the west and some of the trees that have been planted (e.g. trelliana) will be removed. No mature trees in the cemetery area currently being used will be removed, however there are some shrubby, small ones that have come up by themselves and these may be removed where appropriate. Generally the existing area will be tidied up and some small bushy shrubs/trees will be planted. It is also planned to plant shrubs around the boundary of the cemetery grounds to form a hedge, which should look good. In the newer area to the west large trees will not be planted as they are not appropriate for a cemetery, causing damage to graves, memorials and such. In this area the planting will be smaller bushy type shrubs. The method of fixing any plaques in the new lawn area will also be changed to be placed on a strip of concrete therefore preventing the existing problem of the plaques being below the surrounding ground level, as happens when the lawn gowns and top dressing is carried out. The proposed new method has proved successful in other parts of the shire. A geotechnical survey of the original cemetery in the south western corner of the grounds will be carried and this should pick up the location of any graves that are presently not marked. These will then be marked and the area fenced. The records were lost for these graves many years ago when the old shire hall burnt down. I do have some concept plans of the proposal and if you want to have a look please give me a call and I can arrange for you to see them. As stated earlier this work will be carried out over a number of years. What is proposed is really a tidy and freshen up and not in any way large scale redevelopment. Ludwig Leichhardt Park:- There are several large trees in the park that have been lopped and due to the height of the sapling branches which have sprouted up are unsafe and need to be removed. There will be about 11 trees removed in total. This may seem to be a lot but there are several in this number that are not healthy, have never grown properly (and never will), are too close together and as stated due to their size and height are unsafe. Apart from a sickly Ooline none of the trees are rare, they are mostly gums of which there will be remaining examples left standing. The idea is to provide a more open area and it is hoped the quality of the grass will improve and require a lot less watering. Again this is part of a planned upgrade of the park and I am sure if you have a good look you will agree that the park is looking fairly tired and is in need of a freshen up. Again no large scale redevelopment is planned, just a tidy and freshen up of the area. The removal of the trees will take place very shortly. Rest assured all works proposed have been given careful consideration, are in the interests of safety and part of an overall plan to provide good, safe, tidy facilities into the future. Please give me a call if you have any concerns. Regards Vaughn Cr Vaughn Becker Mob 0427 582 221 Ph 07 4627 3995
