From David: Gratitude Day 1. I will begin these seven days of gratitude with the brutal math of the disease that insulted me this summer. (Leukemia) The hospital staff informed me that I should not have survived past the first five days of diagnosis. That I was touch and go for the first eighteen days. So, first, I am grateful for God . Apparently, Hes not finished with me. He saved me. And, He put some of the most remarkable people on the planet in my life. I am grateful for Doctors and nurses, especially Dr. Estil Vance and the nurses of Medical City, building D, upper floors. I dont believe in coincidences. And how my busted A ended up in front of one of the top Leukemia Doctors on the planet... Well, I know how, but wow! And for the nurses who cared for me, allowed for the flow of family, firefighters, and friends, handled correspondences... I am grateful. For Carol Burrow Leos who made a great effort in bringing my girls to Dallas so they could see me during that first period, and for those few precious nights we shared, I am grateful. I am grateful for my children. They give me the propose, focus, determination, and the motivation to fight. Im grateful for siblings. Mine showed up in a big way. One kept me out of the ICU with his bad jokes, another is a perfect bone marrow match. They snuck in food, spent nights by my side and too often shed tears. And for my mother, who came to see me which is huge at her age, I am grateful. And then theres my Big Family! My brothers and sisters of The Dallas Fire Department! and Fire Departments across the Cross. Wow! I am grateful for Firefighters! Im proud to be one of them. There is a large group of them who are right now working my shift. There are firefighters doing legwork and paperwork for me There are a huge number of firefighters fundraising for me. So many of you have carved time away from your lives and spent it at the hopspital. It is awesome to watch you respond! I am grateful for prayers and prayer groups. There are thousands of you who have prayed and subsequently have prayed for those who battle cancer. And your prayers are heard and are working. I am grateful for the hope prayers give to our world. I am grateful for the support groups that formed and those who have stood up for my cause and gave their encouragement; #hotnailsfordavid and #FightingwithDavidLeos . I am honored and grateful. I am grateful for friends. Some of you I have known...for a long time. And you have been there during my most difficult days stopping the flood. You know who you are. Friends are amazing! Well, thats day one. I may have used me, my, I and mine a bit much. Thats chemo head for you. I guess Im supposed to call people forward to take this grateful challenge. But, you know me, Ill leave it to you. Peace
