From Dr. Hussain Gilani As a nephrologist, I spend a lot of time warning my patients about supplements. Your kidneys are particularly sensitive to damage from bad dietary supplements. The one thing that John Oliver doesnt mention in this piece is that since supplements have virtually no FDA regulatory oversight, they frequently have contaminants or unlabeled ingredients. Often times when you do laboratory analysis you will see banned substances like ephedra or fen-phen, others are laced with heavy metal contaminants like arsenic, cadmium, or mercury, and yet others contain unlabeled pharmaceuticals like diuretics or steroids. If a supplement or medicinal herb has a black box on it that says This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, or cure any disease... then I would say avoid, unless they have been validated by an independent lab to contain what they actually say they contain without contaminants. Products that have USP on the label have independent verification. The website consumerlabs is also a good resource. This does not legally constitute medical advice disclaimer here.
