From Eric. I am looking for some advice. I was in a motorcycle accident 23 years ago. My left leg below the knee was pinned between the car and the motorcycle. My leg was pretty much gutted, but with 23 surgeries I still have it. Most of my pain is in my foot. It has been fused and has several pins in it. I had surgery in November to help freeze the joints in the top of my foot. It didn’t work and now I am in even more pain. I would love to hear from amputees who had significant skin damage to their leg. I have had two skin grafts and while the skin is healthy it is not ideal for a flap. I believe the Dr. told me a normal lower leg amputation is 14 centimeters and mine would be 10 or 8. I talked to the prosthetics and I was told he would have no problem fitting me for a leg that was shorter. My original Dr. doesn’t think I should do it because of this as he fears I would lose the leg above the knee. He would rather put braces on me that sort of work and have my take over the counter pain meds. It’s not a great way to live, but I am only 41, and I have been dealing with this for 22 years. I would like to get part of my life back. My new Dr. is very aggressive and she feels while it would not be an A typical amputation, it could be done with a normal amputee life. Not sure what I should do.
