From Escaping Christianity ~ Finding Christ There are various cultural identifications of evil throughout the world. Here is an exhortation from Jesus not to resist evil: But I say to you resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Matthew 5:39) We do not understand this exhortation. The fundamentalist does not want to follow this Jesus. If they did, there would not be continual finger pointing and condemnation of others. The ego is the one that separates one from another and nation against nation. It is this corporeal ego that must have a cross experience so that it might rise again as a new creature. Then there is the paradoxical scripture that says resist the devil. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7) The devil we are to resist is the driving force of the ego within. It is this devil that appears externally until the creature understands that it is a reflection of mans own internal nature. As humans, we need an external foe to affix blame. It is hard for the ego to come to the realization that it is in fact the adversary of the burgeoning Christ that is being birthed within.
