From Florida Sea Grant: We would like to take the time to congratulate Mike Kane, a native plant researcher at the University of Florida who has used Sea Grant funding to develop novel ways to grow and store sea oats and other plants essential to beach dune restoration. Kane has been awarded a lifetime achievement award from the Society for In Vitro Biology. The Society for In Vitro Biology established the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989 to recognize those who have achieved academic excellence in their field of study and to honor those who have made significant and contributions to the field of in vitro biology and/or in the development of novel technologies that have advanced in vitro biology. Kane developed plant tissue protocols to enable native growers to rapidly produce commercial quantities of native sea oats to alleviate production chokepoints caused by dependence on plants grown from seed. The ability to grow the plants with this efficiency is crucial to dune restoration after a major storm. But Kane is as dedicated to his students as he is his research. During his 27-year career as a research professor at the University of Florida, he has been a member of more than 60 graduate committees. Read to find out more about Kanes significant contribution to keeping our coasts healthy! Congrats Dr. Kane!
