From International Cat Care Recently an article was published about the dangers of laundry capsules to children - and we want to make owners aware that they also pose a risk to cats. Concentrated laundry liquids are extremely irritant to the skin and mucous membranes (lining the mouth, throat and intestinal tract). If cats get the liquid on their fur, they will try to lick it off - which can result in severe chemical burns to the skin and damage to the mucous membranes. Affected cats may also vomit, and inhale the material again, resulting in inhalation pneumonia. The damage the liquid causes to the mucous membranes can cause further problems and be fatal. We would like to make cat owners aware of this issue, as the Veterinary Poisons Information Service have had at least 78 reported cases of this with cats and it is easily avoidable. Ensure that laundry detergents are kept in a safe place that the cat cant access, and containers are closed properly, to prevent accidental spillages, and clean up any spillages promptly before the cat has a chance to investigate. For more information on household hazards and what to do if you suspect your cat has been poisoned, please visit icatcare.org/advice/keeping-your-cat-safe/household-hazards-cats-and-kittens Together, we can raise awareness and keep cats everywhere safe.
