From Jenna Clements working with Children of the Promise (COTP) in Lagossette, Haiti: Milot is a hospital about 20 mins away from COTP and we spend many many hours at Milot. Whether it is with sick kids or long-term staff, Milot is a common place for us to head to. However, I had yet to go there after the 6 months I’ve worked at COTP. So the other day I decided to go with my friend, Kerry, and two of the babies here who needed to go for casts on their leg and arms. (I also got to drive one of the ways for the first time, which was really fun!) We arrived at about 8am. I was with my little friend Paco. Paco is getting braces put on his clubbed arms and hands. From 9:15-12 I sat there holding Paco and watching the doctor create his casts right in front of me. When I say “office”, what I really mean is an old container. The inside of the container looked more like a garage complete with screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, bandsaw, and a sander. Tubs of velcro and straps sat on a shelf. It smelt like burnt plastic. Paco and I sat there and watched as he cut, sanded, drilled, glued, and bent a brace together for Paco’s little hands. As I was sitting there, I was thinking about Haiti. I was thinking about all the people who had been waiting outside for hours. I was thinking about Paco’s little hands and the pain he was feeling. I was thinking about how Paco needs a family. I was thinking I was hungry and was happy I remembered snacks. I was thinking about those who didn’t have snacks. I was thinking about… It’s not hard to get lost in thoughts here. What you have to be careful of is thinking too much and not doing enough. I can not only stay in Haiti for one year. There is no way I could fully invest in the work that is going on here in only one year. I am deciding to stay longer so I can have more time to put my thoughts in action. I hope you will continue to follow me along that journey! This month, I made a video highlighting our Haitian nurse Dieuline (Jew-lynn): https://youtube/watch?v=5boeCS7vKBI&feature=youtu.be If you would like to follow and see some pictures of what Jenna is doing you can go to her blog: jennaclements.wordpress
