From John Threlkeld : AN URGENT MESSAGE FROM AFGE LEGISLATIVE AND POLITICAL DIRECTOR BETH MOTEN IN RE THE HOUSE BACKPAY BILL: The House bill (H.R. 3223) to provide backpay for federal employees who are furloughed during the current shutdown will reportedly be considered by the House Rules Committee later tonight and could be on the House floor for a vote as soon as Saturday, October 5. The legislation, which is sponsored by Representative Jim Moran (D-VA), has already racked up 72 cosponsors. If your lawmaker has not cosponsored this bill, please urge her or him to do so. For a list of cosponsors, please see my posting from earlier today. This legislation, which now has five Republican cosponsors, is increasingly bipartisan. Avowed supporters include conservative Republicans (like Representatives Randy Forbes (VA) and Rob Bishop (UT), moderate Democrats (like Representatives Jim Cooper (TN) and Henry Cuellar (TX), and a long list of liberal and progressive Democrats. However, given the antagonism towards the federal government and the working- and middle-class American who make up its civil service on the part of some House extremists, passage is far from a sure thing. Please urge your lawmakers to support H.R. 3223.
