From Joy Patterson Thompson: Hi everyone!! I am new to the page. I was asked to come and share an email that my 17 year old son sent to his Econ teacher last week. My son has ADHD, ODD, ASD, and Conduct Disorder. Here is the whole email. Dear Mr. ???, i am writing about the incident on the 7th of january after school... i realize i may have acted a bit rashly and quite possibly have offended you. my actions were inexcusable and were completely out of line... however.... i must direct you to my I.E.P, the reason i have an I.E.P is because i have been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, ADD and ODD (oppositional defiance disorder) there fore the school has made accommodations which, i might add, you sir, are required to follow. one of said obligations is that i am allowed to go to the learning lab/ library etc... to work on any assignment/test/review/worksheet etc... it also states that i am allowed to take a break at any time during class if i am stressed/worried/hyperactive, under these circumstances i am allowed to go for a walk, got to the learning lab/counselors office or any other predetermined room (see my I.E.P for more...) in essence Mr.Herdegen, your decision to halt any instance in which i request to leave the class is in violation of my I.E.P and district and state law... with all due respect, sir, my request to leave your class is more a formality. in fact it is of my opinion that you sir, owe me an apology. yours respectfully - Tanner J, Sypert P.S. in the future I would appreciate it if you would inform me of such things privately. as this would save myself the embarrassment of a blatant and asinine attempt to embarrass me in front of my peers, and would save you the effort and the display of such bad form. the reason i requested an apology is because of the embarrassment of being called out in front of those people whose opinion of me is already bad enough. - Tanner As a parent, I believe he did an awesome job advocating for himself!! First time by the way. But others have felt he was being rude to the teacher in this email.
