From M Shane Tutwiler: Ive always been critical of innovation for innovations sake--the idea that new is always better. Having served on nuclear-powered submarines, I can assure you that is not the case. If your desired outcomes are safety, stability, and equality, and not profits and market share, then some systems work best when not exposed to disruptive innovation. Most disruptive innovations fail. Thats fine when your outcomes are wickets sold for a profit in an industry populated with other firms doing the same thing. To me, the human factor changes everything. Im much more a fan of critical innovation. I prefer, when possible, the careful identification of aspects of complex systems that can be improved without destroying the system writ large. Its not always possible, but in fields such as education, where your outcomes are the degree to which you have prepared your students to be critical thinkers and work within specialized trades, the high failure rate of disruptive innovations is unacceptable.
