From Mens Fitness (Jan-Feb, 2015). Ancient gladiators may have been forced to slay lions to entertain blood-thirsty Romans, but they didnt go the butchery route for their own meals. When researchers from the Universities of Vienna and Bern tested 1,800-year-old gladiator skeletons excavated from a Roman cemetery, the bones exhibited few signs of meat eating-or, for that matter, dairy consumption. Instead, they proved that the warriors ate almost exclusively vegetables, millet, beans, and barley [hence their nickname, barley men]. These were extreme athletes; its likely that the diet was specially developed to produce better performance...they downed an energy drink made of vinegar and ash, said to be rich in calcium and magnesium.
