From My Blog Thoughts on the American Government shutdown and the warning for Australia I have monitored American politics for a little while and I have seen the destruction of the American political system and now not only Americans but soon the world would feel the effects. In America a government shutdown is when the government runs out of money and Congress (Parliament) does not give more money though appropriations. The fight is over the Affordable Care Act or as you may know it Obamacare. America has got a poor health care system where those who can afford it have no issues however if you are poor it is rubbish as the American Medicare is different and harder to get in the USA. Barack Obama passed the bill making it easier to get health insurance hardly a socialist policy now despite him passing a centre right bill the far right Tea Party has gone crazy over this bill calling it socialised medicine, treat to freedom and other paranoid theories. Now any one with a brain knows this is crap however in 2010 many of them got elected and gained the House of Representatives. Shortly after there was a census and the electoral districts changed and in America it is done by the states, which meant Republicans have a good chance of keeping the house. Now they have been talking about a shutdown for years promising it to its base supporters coming close a few times and on top of that attempting to repeal it over 40 times. Now the 2012 election Obamacare was a major issue and Obama was re-elected and because of the electoral boundaries the Republicans kept the house despite a majority of Americans wanting a Democrat controlled house. Now Last time the Republicans tried this in 1995-1996 the Republicans suffered and clearly has not leaned anything. Now in the Appropriation bill that the House passed it would either defund or delay Obamacare now it would never pass and they know it. The main Tea Party complaint is that government spending is too high now some agree people like me disagree now they have taken over the Republican Party putting moderates in a weak position. Now the only way is House speaker John Boehner to introduce the senate bill and just it would pass with moderate Republicans and Democrat support however costing him the speakership. But how can Australia be effected now our economy is closely linked to China so this should not hurt us in the long term however if there is no end soon it might start effecting other economies including ours. Now unlike in America Budgets pass in this country and we will hopefully never have to worry about Continuing Resolutions (Temporary emergency funding) however a Tea Party inspired movement in Australia dose exist and Cory Bernardi is seen as a Tea Party inspired politician and he does have some influence and could cause issues. After the 1st of July the senate the balance of power is being controlled by people from the Clive Palmer party (3 seats), Liberal Democratic Party, Motoring enthusiasts party and Bob Day from Family First. Now besides Bob Day I know they are all far right and with Day I have read a few of his opinion pieces on a conservative website and the more I read the fear I have for this country grows. I do not think any of these senators are responsible and the way most were elected was controversial though legal. Now they may push Abbott to the right on policy’s and he I fell would be comfortable with that now I hope I am wrong but I fell Australia needs to know what could happen.
