From NHK World: Water levels pass peak, but still high in Europe Record rainfall has peaked in central Europe, leaving at least 13 people dead. But water levels are still high and rising in Germany and Austria, prompting fears of possible floods and landslides. The downpour started last Thursday, swelling rivers in many parts of the region. At least 13 people died in the Czech Republic, Austria and other countries when rivers burst their banks, inundating towns and cities. The rain topped out on Wednesday but the Danube and the Elbe rivers are still threatening the region. About 10 percent of houses in the Austrian village of Emmersdorf are submerged. Rescuers are using boats to deliver supplies to people stranded on the upper floors of their homes. In the Czech capital of Prague, the swollen Vltava River has shut down the Charles Bridge, a popular tourist attraction. Workers have installed metal barriers along the river. Water levels on the Elbe and the Danube are likely to peak around the weekend. Jun. 5, 2013 - Updated 23:07 UTC
