From RWA: FAQ: How did some categories end up with 18 finalists and some with 2 or 3? RWA RESPONSE: According to the contest rules, “all entries with a minimum total score of at least 90 percent of the total possible score will advance to the final round.” The number of finalists in a particular year is based on the books submitted and judged by fellow romance authors. The discrepancies in category finalist numbers is, in part, a result of combining some categories to reflect changes in the marketplace. MY OPINION: What? If the category shift reflected the marketplace there wouldnt be an overflow of brilliant novels in a couple categories and a distinct lack of novels in others. If it reflects the marketplace it should be more even across the board.
