From St. Johns 2014-15 Looking Forward to the Journey Frankincense Devotional Booklet Monday, November 10 Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven;” (Luke 6:37 NRSV) I have run into a surprising response to “do not judge, and you will not be judged.” Several of my acquaintances said, “We have a duty to correct wrong behavior.” The confusion seems to lie in the difference between correcting and judging. Correcting behavior is simply identifying observed events. Judging is assigning a motive – it is presuming to know what is in a person’s heart. Only God knows what is in someone’s heart. It is His privilege and ability alone, not ours. If we can accept that only God really knows what is in anyone’s heart, it becomes easier to accept people at their word and appreciate them even if we don’t understand some of their actions. Realizing that even someone who has wronged you can only be judged by God makes it much easier for us to forgive rather than judge or condemn. Heavenly Father, forgive us for judging others rather than accepting them in love and trusting you to purify their hearts. Create in me a pure heart O God, and renew a right spirit within me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. by John Skogstoe
