From The Earth Shall Weep by James Wilson... an interview of a Lakota man in the 1930s: " When I was...about fourteen , I remember that the white men were coming and that they were going to fight us to the finish and take away our land, and I thought it was not right. We are humans too and God created us all alike, and I was going to do the best I could to defend my nation. We roamed the country freely, and this country belonged to us in the first place. But since the white men came we were fighting all the time. The white men were just going to kill all of us. The band I was in got together and said they were not going to let the white men run over them and down deep in my heart I was going to defend my fellow men to the last. At the age of ten or eleven I had a six-shooter and a quiver full of arrows to defend my nation."
