From Theresa Ramsey: STOMP OUT CANCER EVENT! November 15, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Memorial Hall You have cancer. Three of the most dreaded words one could ever imagine. Depending on the type of cancer, how early it is detected, treatment options available and one’s inner strength to fight this disease – all come together to determine the outcome. While we can’t prevent this terrible disease, we can promote awareness to help “STOMP OUT CANCER.” Awareness brings attention to the cause which validates the overwhelming need to find a cure while giving hope. On November 15, 2014, we invite all those touched by ANY type of cancer (survivors, victims still fighting and friends/family of those who lost the battle) to join us as we gather at 9:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Memorial Hall for a “STOMP OUT CANCER” Event. As we gather that Saturday morning, we will learn more about pancreatic cancer, a silent killer on the rise; mingle and share our stories about all types of cancer battles; sign letters to Congress requesting more support for cancer funding which in turn equals more research to find a cure; witness a “symbolic” stomp by the Purple TuTu team and finally join in the action as we stomp/clog to bluegrass tunes. The month of November has been declared Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month in Franklin and Macon County by our local officials. But, did you know that November is also Lung Cancer, Stomach Cancer, and Carcinoid Cancer Month? Unfortunately, with so many types of cancer today, every month has several cancer designations identified by the various colors we wear to show our support, such as ribbons, bracelets, etc. Cancers that have had significant breakthroughs with regards to advancing treatment options in which some individuals are cured and declared cancer free are far and few in number. These cancers are well-known, have screenings/tests for diagnosis which often enable early identification thereby giving hope for a cure. Other cancers, like pancreatic cancer, are much more difficult to diagnose, treat or overcome. By 2020, pancreatic cancer will be second behind the number one cancer causing death in the US, lung cancer, and with no test in place to screen for the disease to catch it early, it is generally late stage when discovered and 73% of patients die within the first year of diagnosis while 94% die within the first five years. Being personally effected by pancreatic cancer in the recent loss of my sister-in-law, Diane Ramsey Forsyth, who courageously battled pancreatic cancer for two years, we are driven to speak out – to tell Diane’s story in hope of sparking interest and more importantly – awareness. Diane’s greatest wish was that this cancer and all cancers (which strike so indiscriminately) could be cured. When a specific cancer touches your family, you become aware, connected to the cause and will settle for nothing less than a cure. What does this all me to you and me? Our “STOMP OUT CANCER” Event is aimed at promoting awareness. Awareness brings education; education fosters interest and acceptance of a need. Need drives action and action can bring about change. As James W. Foley so eloquently wrote, “Drop a pebble in the water; just a splash, and it is gone; but there’s half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on, spreading, spreading from the center, flowing on out to the sea. And there is no way of telling where the end is going to be.” Awareness brings understanding of the need to find a cure which can only happen through research that is made possible by funding. We need adequate funding by Congress for all cancer research! Please join us for our “STOMP OUT CANCER” Event on November 15, 2014! Remember, the event is open to all, specifically those touched by ANY cancer (not just pancreatic cancer). Please contact Theresa Ramsey at (828) 369-7411 for more information. In the end, we all want the same thing, to hear these three words – YOU ARE CURED! #WNCnews #MaconCounty
