From Weston Hurds Ad Hoc Culture Committee -- Memorial Day Weekend Movie Reviews Goldfinger – at the Cinematheque (right across from the Art Museum, free parking), Fri. at 9;15, Sat. at 7:15. This is a brand new print celebrating the 50th anniversary of the movie. What a movie! This was the part of the one-two punch of the British Invasion with the Beatles, et al being the “one.” This movie was a huge hit and started the whole spy-mania thing. It stars Sean Connery, Gert Frobe and Honour Blackman. It has unforgettable images: the laser, the hat, the car, the girl. Even the music is great - the incomparable Shirley Bassey singing the title song. If you’ve never seen it, or haven’t seen it for fifty years, this is one great movie. 3.8/4. Locke – one guy, one car, one solid movie. Ninety really fast minutes that make you think. Stars Thomas Hardy who you last saw as the bad guy in the last Batman movie – but he had that thing on his face all the time. 3.7/4.0 Belle – this is a sort of true story of a mixed race girl growing up in late 1700’s England. Mix in some Jane Austen, and some British legal history and this is one very good movie. The Plain Dealer (Stephen Whitey from NJ again) gave this a C+. It deserves a B+. 3.4/4.
