From Wikipedia Cycads are not closely related to the true palms (Arecaceae). Cycas revoluta the Latin specific epithet revoluta means curled back, in reference to the leaves. I am sharing this with you because it has become my least favorite plant. I thought it had no redeeming social value. It seemed every dog I know diagnosed with this poisoning had passed away. What value could it possibly have? It turns out that in a portion of the world these plants provide a source of nutrition for the population. The trick to avoiding the poison is careful preparation and never eating the seeds. So I can understand why they are cultivated as food elsewhere. If they are not a food source for you and your family but only decorations in your yard, I am back to the beginning, why plant them at all?
