From a 17-Year-Old Caucasian Cis-Het Male On The Spectrum: In hindsight, the fact that this movie was snubbed of any chance of nomination at this years Oscars goes to show how the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences prefers flicks that cover the topic of institutionalized racism: while 12 Years A Slave did indeed have people of African lineage in certain first-unit positions (Steve McQueen as director; John Ridley as screenwriter; Mr. Chiwitel Eijiofor, Ms. Lupita Nyongo, Ms. Adepero Oduye, Ms. Alfre Woodard, and Ms. Quevenzhane Wallis as the primary cast), Brad Pitt appears at the second act as a considerable muse of Solomon Northup -- and an inspiration. Fruitvale Station, by that very token, had no benevolent white-savior types. Whether or not some of us (of the Caucasian persuasion) committed any individual acts of animosity towards ethnic minorities makes no difference -- we are still conditioned into unquestioning complacency and, thus, do not see racism as an institution in and of itself. Mind you, the point I stated earlier had been echoed from the lips of many who lived through such experiences -- from being barred from a Woolworths for the simple, rational request of sitting at a whites-only lunch counter, to being tackled to the ground, stopped, and frisked.
