From a Maui teacher: After yet another 2-hour staff meeting on how to prepare our students for the new high-stakes SBAC test (that, thanks to the Common Core) has replaced the OLD high-stakes tests, Ive realized that I signed up to be a TEACHER, not a tester, and Im wondering if a career change is in order. Between all the mandated tests and the expectation that I focus at least some of my instruction on preparation and practice for the test, about 20% of my instructional year is about testing. Thats 20% of the instructional year that Im not instructing. And given the differences between the SBAC and previous tests, my choice is between test prep and allowing my students to feel frustrated and stupid.
